Capriccio

With modernity’s promise of the middle class come terms such as dining room, drawing room, living room. Despite being well-tailored instruments for gathering, their specificity stifles forms of socializing unrehearsed and unheard-of. This proposal would like to reintroduce the antechamber, a mostly pre-modern room type, back to the contemporary domestic setting.

Traditionally lying just beyond the edge of functionality, the antechamber is an ambiguous buffer zone where everything pauses, breathes, and nothing happens. Far from being banal, the ambiguity of the antechamber has much to offer contemporary life.
Half-way between the living room and the wunderkammer, the antechamber is a microcosm of the household. It is both a depository of treasured memories, as well as a representation of its collective life.
